I absolutely love my smoothies! Often I have a big smoothie for breakfast and it keeps me full until lunchtime. They are a great way to up your veggie and fruit intake for the day. I often get asked what I put in my smoothies.
While occasionally I might follow a recipe that intrigues me, mostly it depends on what’s available, how much time I have and what I fancy on the day.
Here are some basics you can follow to make really healthy and delicious smoothies.
1. Choose a base.
My favourite is coconut water. You could also use any nut milk, rice milk, soy milk or plain filtered water if you prefer.
2. Add some veggies.
I always add at least a cup of leafy greens like spinach, kale, silverbeet or lettuce. You could also add a handful of herbs like basil, parsley or mint if available. Some other veggies you could use are beets, zucchini & cucumbers.
3. Add some fruit for sweetness.
I always add some frozen organic berries. They are low in sugar and very high in antioxidants. In addition whatever is in season. At the moment there is so much lovely fruit to choose from here in Melbourne….plums, peaches, melons, paw paw, bananas, grapes, figs, pineapple or choose any other fruits if you are in a different part of the world…the list is endless.
4. Superfood Extras
You can take your smoothie to another level by adding any of these amazing foods like chia seeds, flaxseeds, flaxseed oil, avocados, matcha powder, maca, acai, good quality organic protein powder, turmeric, cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, vanilla paste, cacao, goji berries, aloe vera gel….again, the list is endless.
Try and use organic produce wherever possible because it doesn’t contain harmful pesticides and herbicides and is higher in nutritional content as compared to the conventionally grown produce.
